At a packed 02 arena, Leicester Riders triumphed over Newcastle Eagles in a high quality game. British Basketball has been steadily growing over the last few years and this spectacular event proved how far basketball in this country has come.
In the women’s play off final the Sevenoaks Suns defeated the Nottingham Wildcats. Hoops Aid, a celebrity match, followed the women’s game. Among the celebrities taking part were Adebayo Akinfenwa and David James. Once the 02 had been filled, the days main event took part – the men’s playoff final between the two fierce rivals Newcastle Eagles (The BBL’s most successful franchise) and Leicester Riders (This year’s league and trophy winners).
Leicester Riders took an early lead and went up 29-11 in the first quarter. Newcastle Eagles found it hard to recover, Leicester’s advantage rose to 20 points and the score at half time was 47-27 to the Riders. Leicester’s work ethic and intensity continued throughout the second half and the final score was 84-63 to Leicester Riders. It was a huge team effort from the Riders which allowed them to thrash a skilfull Newcastle Eagles team.
