Isle of MTV Malta officially turned ten years old and had no showing of stopping. The festival (28th June) celebrated a decade of bringing the noise to Malta with features including great names such as Wiz Khalifa, Jess Glynne, Steve Aoki and more.
Thousands of excited people accumulated onto the baking hot Il-Fosos Square in Floriana for yet another spectacular live show showcasing some of the biggest names in music right now.
This year marked a special anniversary for the collaboration between Malta and MTV, with breathtaking shots of vibrant colours and celebrations as musicians would showcase their music to the buzzing crowd, who managed to see all of this, in an open-air venue, for free. (Yeah, we know)
‘Clean Bandit were first to the stage opening with ‘Real Love’ and reeling out hit after hit from their debut album including ’Stronger’, ‘Extraordinary’ plus their covers of 90s floor fillers ‘U Sure Do’ and ‘Show Me Love’. Their brand new single ‘Tears’ went down a storm but it was of course their huge No.1 ‘Rather Be’ which brought the metaphorical roof down as they came to the end of their set.
Next up, Jess Glynne, joined by her energetic live band had the 50,000 strong crowd chanting back every word of her infectious tunes including ‘Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself’, ‘Ain’t Got Far To Go’, ‘My Love’ and a storming cover of Chaka Khan’s classic ‘I Feel For You’. Taking the tempo down a touch for her ballad ‘Take Me Home’, an “honoured” Jess told the crowd she how incredible the packed Square looked before her massive feel good track ‘Hold My Hand’ saw her set come to a euphoric and glitter-stewn climax.” Mike Pell, MTV
But afterwards, one of our favourites at Cultivation, Wiz Khalifa. After high demand of the crowd chanting his name, the US rapper entered the stage, and lit up the festival.
Initiating a very hyped-up performance, Khalifa, performed his well-renounced hit singles “We Dem Boys”, “Work Hard, Play Hard” and also “Bake Sale” featuring Travi$ Scott. In general, he set the stage well for the final big act of the night. The man, the myth, the EDM legend, Steve Aoki.
Closing the show, Aoki, as usual, created a flood of an LED-lit backdrop, in which he had the crowd buzzing through the night until the end. The DJ, made sure the people got their fix and expectations as he filled the time with remixes as well as his hit singles.
As you may know Aoki, we’re pretty sure, you’ve seen how energetic he is. This was nothing to dismiss that, Aoki was very active and hyped through people’s bedtimes. Only epitomising the great 10 year anniversary of the Isle of MTV Malta experience.
All in all, this intertwined into an unforgettable night for the residents of Malta and the tourists who came over to see their favourite artists perform. An epic evening.
We’ll see you next year.
